Lantern Parade

The Stacksteads Lantern Parade is an initiative born out of the Stacksteads Country Park Group, and was established with the specific aim of bringing the Stacksteads Community together, providing opportunities to learn new skills and give the community a focus. The original ‘lantern parade’ was the brainchild of Susie Hayhurst and Gill Knowles. Inspired by a visit to the Lantern Parade in Todmorden, Susie and Gill thought “If they can do it in Todmorden, why not in Stacksteads?”

Local community artist, Ruth Evans, was brought on board to organise lantern making workshops and inject creative inspiration. Ruth organised workshops in schools and youth groups and some specifically aimed at adult. The workshops provide instruction in how to work with willow and subsequently create a broad range of lantern to include in a parade, which would be the culmination of all the work done and included food ,drink and music. Last years Lantern Parade was a success beyond anyone’s expectations, and the event for 2016 will be bigger and better.

A new group has been formed to manage this year’s event, which includes the original team and additional members from The Boo Puppet Theatre. The event will be known as ‘Light Up The Valley 2016’, and will take place on Saturday 29th October. They even have a brand new logo.

There will be a number of workshops and activities being planned that will provide lots more opportunities for community bonding and acquiring new skills
